Charcoal from Photographs with Betsey MacDonald

Mondays April 29, May 6, 13, 20 (4 Classes) 9:00AM – 12:00PM

The ancient medium of charcoal is one of Betsey’s favorites because it allows for spontaneity, strong velvety darks and so much flexibility with values. In this class, you’ll create dramatic, energetic charcoal drawings from our own photos. It’s important that the photos are our own as Betsey believes that art should be a personal vision from the beginning. Photos may be portraits, animals, landscapes or anything that lends itself to a dramatic black and white drawing. You may also choose to combine photos. You’ll learn about and use different types of charcoal and a variety of techniques  to create our fun, powerful, personal, photography based drawings. Supplies: Vine and stick charcoal, charcoal pencils, erasers, stumps, large mixed media paper or other heavy weight paper pad about 16 x 20, phone, magnifying mirror (if you have it), several black and white printed portraits preferably taken by the student.
