Where do you live?

I was born in Ohio into a family of artists. Making art has always been a big part of my life. I spent my 20s in Southern California and moved to RI in 1979. I have lived in East Greenwich for 33 years.

How long have you been a member?

I have been a member of WAA for 23 years and became a JAM a year after joining.

How would you describe your artwork?

I work mainly in oils, focusing on landscapes and still life. But I am an Aquarius through and through. I love learning new techniques and mediums. I love using oil and cold wax which I learned from Diane Brown in classes at the gallery. They lend themselves to more abstract art. And I studied gouache for six months last year. I’ve had a lot of fun with collage as well.

From where do you find your inspiration?

I find my inspiration in nature, from the rocky coastlines of New England to the turquoise seas of the Caribbean, and even in my own gardens. I am obsessed with cloudscapes and skies in general and the changing light.

What is the most important thing that you want viewers to take away from your artwork?

In my work I hope to inspire a sense of time and place. To spark a memory of their own and become involved in my obsession.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

A couple of pieces of advice I try to remember are: ‘The only courage you need is the courage to begin.’ And, “Always start with your biggest brushes, leave the details until the very end.”  Trish Hurley

What is the most important skill you should have as an artist?

I believe having a solid foundation in drawing and color theory are important skills.

What is you favorite thing about the Wickford Art Association?

Favorite things about the Wickford Art Association are the diversity of the gallery shows, the variety of available classes and of course the Art Festival. Being a member has allowed me to meet, get to know and appreciate so many other artists and their work. I enjoy the sense of community I feel there.

What do you enjoy most about your artistry/being an artist?

Making art takes me out of myself.  Hours spent concentrating pass in a flash. I love capturing a moment or a feeling in my paintings.

Do you have any upcoming shows?

I currently have a show hanging at North Koffee in North Kingstown. It consists of work inspired by my annual time spent in St. Maarten and will be up through April. They have great coffee, roasted on site, and an artist’s corner that changes monthly. Check it out!
