My work began to be accepted into national juried exhibitions in the early 1970s, and I have exhibited in a wide range of shows ever since. I have been included in at least 300 exhibits. Included in this exhibit are five pieces from my Emergence series, more of which may be seen in my catalogue at the gallery.
For twenty-two years I was a full time art professor, teaching typically three different preparations per semester, more than fifteen different courses—most of which I brought into the program of Loyola University Maryland. In addition to expanding the curriculum, for almost half my time there I directed the Studio Arts program, while serving on numerous academic committees (including the elected position of Chair of Faculty Affairs/Vice Chair of the Senate for three years).
As a graduate student at the University of New Mexico I taught drawing, printmaking and two-dimensional design, and brought the first digital software into the College of Fine Arts’ Art and Art History Department in the early 90s. I designed and taught the first digital courses in Studio Arts, and another grad student joined with me to teach in the Photography area.
The year I earned my undergraduate degree I also became the first full-time art teacher at a private school in my hometown and designed and taught the full two- and three-dimensional program that has grown into an entire wing of the school. Also working in clay, when starting out I taught courses in drawing, hand building and pottery on the wheel at the local YWCA. Years later I produced two Percent for the Arts permanent projects made of clay.
My early focus artistically was drawing and lithographic printmaking. In New Mexico I spread my wings and tried many new forms of art-making, including book arts, the entirety of which is still a great love. In Albuquerque I led several extensive collaborative projects, including the creation of a large community garden on the grounds of a former school where I had a studio before relocating to Maryland.
Currently, I am an active member of Artists’ Cooperative Gallery of Westerly, and have been serving as webmaster since 2022.
