How would you describe your artwork/From where do you find your inspiration?
My alcohol ink paintings could be described as intuitive in approach and abstract in design. In what I call ‘first pour’, these vibrant inks move across the paper manipulated by air and intermingle in unexpected ways as they quickly dry. The resulting unique abstract designs influence further layering, sometimes incorporating realistic elements.
What is the most important thing that you want viewers to take away from your art work?
I want the viewer to be drawn to my paintings by the intense play of colors and their movement on the surface of the non-porous paper, sometimes with unplanned textural effects.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
One of the best pieces of advice I have received is: ‘If you submit a painting to an exhibit and it is rejected, don’t give up…submit it to another…It may even win an award!’
What is the most important skill you should have as an artist?
I think curiosity and open-mindedness are important skills. We should be life-ling learners, always open to expanding on our current skills or learning new ways of creating art as well.
What is your favorite thing about the Wickford Art Association/ about being a member?
From the beginning, I felt a sense of welcome and support at the Wickford Art Association. I have loved exhibiting and teaching for WAA and have met some amazing people through both.
What do you enjoy most about your artistry/being an artist?
I love the journey of beginning with that white piece of paper and pushing the medium, whether watercolor or alcohol inks to its limits, incorporating a ‘what-if’ approach throughout. I love plein air painting with other artists and, as a workshop instructor, I love sharing with others what I have learned over the many years that I have been an artist.
Do you have any upcoming shows?
I will be a part of Cape Cod Art Center’s ‘Class Act’, an exhibit of 2024 students and instructors in January and the 2025 New England Watercolor Society’s Signature Member’s Exhibit in Boston in February to begin this year.
