Where do you live?

I’m a lifelong Rhode Islander, grew up in Wickford, and attended URI College of Pharmacy. I married my husband in Wickford and lived in this area until age 30. We moved to Exeter 25 years ago, raised our daughter and 4 Boxer dogs, and still live there today.

How long have you been a member?

5 years (2019) and a JAM for about 1.5 years (2022)

How would you describe your artwork?

I’m a painter, and my primary painting medium is oil paint (although I love experimenting with other mediums too, such as gouache, casein, pastel, charcoal, watercolor, etc). I paint a wide variety of subject matter including landscape, seascape/beachscape, floral/still life, and portraits (pets and people). My paintings are usually Representational in that the subjects of my paintings are recognizable to the viewer, however my paintings do vary in style and technique. My goal is always to produce a painterly representation, abundant with interesting brushstrokes, edge work, color, light/shadow effects, and composition.

From where do you find your inspiration?

Mother Nature is my number one source of inspiration. I am always fascinated by Her expertise in composition, color theory, and ever-changing lighting/atmosphere.

What is the most important thing that you want viewers to take away from your artwork?

I’m always happy when a viewer can take away a meaningful experience from my artwork… one that they value and want to spend more time with. Maybe the painting transports the viewer to another time or place, or sparks emotion, nostalgia, interest or curiosity. Whatever the viewer takes away from a particular artwork is very subjective. As an artist it’s heartwarming when someone connects with your artwork because you’ve poured your heart into the piece so it’s meaningful to you too.

What is the most important skill you should have as an artist?

I believe the most important skill for an artist to develop relates to artistic composition. If your artwork doesn’t have a pleasing composition that captures the viewer, the viewer won’t stay. Also, being open-minded and humble enough to recognize when a painting needs big changes or to be sent to the trash bin. Sometimes, despite careful planning, the painting just isn’t working out. This is where the artist needs to get creative and consider another approach.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

“Attitude is everything” – Keeping a positive, kind-hearted attitude just makes for a much smoother day. (My Dad’s advice, he was right!) Never stop learning, experimenting, and being curious. With practice, patience and persistence, you can do anything you set your mind to doing.

What is your favorite thing about the Wickford Art Association/ about being a member?

I enjoy being part of an organization from my hometown that has a long and respected history. I can remember admiring WAA and WAF as a child, so this is fun to think about as I never imagined I would ever exhibit my artwork in this Gallery or become a Juried Artist Member.  I have found WAA to be a pleasant environment. The Officers, Directors and Staff members I’ve met all seem dedicated to WAA’s growth and improvement, and they welcome/seek input from members as well.

Do you currently volunteer?

Last year I volunteered at the Gallery, helping with Art Festival preparations. I also volunteered by meeting with the Executive Director to brainstorm and provide input for exhibit theme ideas. This year I hope to help with Gallery sitting if needed.

What do you enjoy most about your artistry/being an artist?

Painting is enjoyable to me personally, but I also just find it so rewarding to be able to create something totally unique which can bring joy to someone’s life. Consumption of artwork can bring meaningful happiness and powerful visceral responses, sometimes to the point of tears. Paintings can provide a place for wonder, reflection, stillness, and welcome distraction. If I can bring any of these things to someone’s life, then I’ve done my job as an artist, and that’s a big part of what I enjoy.
