Nature of Nests with Betsey MacDonald
Saturday June 28th, 10:00AM – 2:00PM (1 class)
Drawing is the bedrock of artistic practice! For this adult class we’ll carefully study and draw nests. Using graphite or more simply, pencil, we’ll learn about subtractive or reductive drawing. We’ll gain an understanding of setting a ground and erasing highlights to create an image as well as building it up with marks. We will complete a detailed study of the amazing texture and interweaving of grasses, sticks and other found items in nests. We’ll look at the contrast between light and shadow and focus on negative spaces within a nest. Through observation and the use of graphite, we’ll learn to really look at some of nature’s most exquisite handiwork as we create our own art and realize that nests are works of art as well. As Aristotle said, “In all things in nature there is something of the marvelous” and few things are as marvelous as bird’s nests!
