Degas said that drawing is the artist’s most direct and spontaneous expression. It’s challenging, mindful and the foundation of visual art. In this class we will use contour line to help us better “see” our subjects and then focus on the use value to describe how light and shadows help us to get to the core of a subject. We’ll observe and draw using pencil and charcoal, a variety of materials like paper, wood, porcelain, metal, glass and natural objects, all of which reflect light differently. Our emphasis will be on representation from direct observation, learning how to use mark making and shading to create form, texture and a sense of space. Students will bring their own objects for a final finished drawing.
