It’s meditative. It teaches me to better see and understand my subject. It forces me to think about value and how I can create the illusion of 3-dimensional form on a 2-dimensional surface just using different grays. In this class\, we’ll confine ourselves to black and white but with a constant eye toward how our discoveries can be translated into color for our future paintings. We’ll draw to complete finished\, quality pieces. We’ll use simple graphite\, tortillons and erasers to create powerful\, intriguing drawings. DESCRIPTION:Seascapes and Water with Sarah Hirsch \nWednesdays\, August 6\, 13\, 20\, 27  from 3:00pm-6:00pm (4 classes) \nSeascapes\, breaking waves\, fluid motion\, gentle reflections in a salt marsh\, and the sun’s enticing glitter over river stones — how do you approach painting water? Water is one part movement and the other part light\, and where we live\, its beauty is a constant inspiration.\n\nIn this mixed-level painting class\, we’ll cover methods of composition\, color mixing and theory\, and a general overview of the physics at play when we look at water. Oils\, watercolors\, gouache and acrylics all welcome.\n\nEach class will have individualized support and instruction as well as friendly group critiques.\n\nStudents’s choice of painting materials – you’ll need a complete set of paints\, paint brushes\, and a palette or palette paper. Rather than emphasizing strict technique\, this workshop will explore the methods and mindset that lead to a rewarding and sustainable plein air experience—one that can meaningfully inform your work back in the studio. \nThrough thoughtful demonstrations\, daily painting sessions\, and group critiques\, you’ll learn how to simplify your setup\, respond intuitively to your environment\, and develop habits that help you stay present\, productive\, and creatively engaged outdoors. DESCRIPTION:Interpretive Abstract with Linda Finnery \nMondays\, July 14\, 21\, 28 August 4 – 9:30 AM – 12:30PM (4 classes) \n  \nExpress yourself in an abstract\, intuitive manner\, pulling in the basics and fundamentals of a working composition. Explore various techniques\, patterns\, shapes\, and colors to enhance your vision as you spontaneously capture the essence of your emotions. The exercises and techniques will be modeled to support this interpretive exploration with mixed media\, including stencils\, rice paper\, collage\, oil pastels\, etc. This is a fun\, dynamic approach.
