DESCRIPTION:Nature of Nests with Betsey MacDonald \nSaturday June 28th\, 10:00AM – 2:00PM (1 class) \nDrawing is the bedrock of artistic practice! For this adult class we’ll carefully study and draw nests. Using graphite or more simply\, pencil\, we’ll learn about subtractive or reductive drawing. We’ll gain an understanding of setting a ground and erasing highlights to create an image as well as building it up with marks. We will complete a detailed study of the amazing texture and interweaving of grasses\, sticks and other found items in nests. We’ll look at the contrast between light and shadow and focus on negative spaces within a nest. Through observation and the use of graphite\, we’ll learn to really look at some of nature’s most exquisite handiwork as we create our own art and realize that nests are works of art as well. DESCRIPTION:Seascapes and Water with Sarah Hirsch \nWednesdays\, August 6\, 13\, 20\, 27  from 3:00pm-6:00pm (4 classes) \nSeascapes\, breaking waves\, fluid motion\, gentle reflections in a salt marsh\, and the sun’s enticing glitter over river stones — how do you approach painting water? Water is one part movement and the other part light\, and where we live\, its beauty is a constant inspiration.\n\nIn this mixed-level painting class\, we’ll cover methods of composition\, color mixing and theory\, and a general overview of the physics at play when we look at water. Oils\, watercolors\, gouache and acrylics all welcome.\n\nEach class will have individualized support and instruction as well as friendly group critiques.\n\nStudents’s choice of painting materials – you’ll need a complete set of paints\, paint brushes\, and a palette or palette paper. It’s meditative. It teaches me to better see and understand my subject. It forces me to think about value and how I can create the illusion of 3-dimensional form on a 2-dimensional surface just using different grays. In this class\, we’ll confine ourselves to black and white but with a constant eye toward how our discoveries can be translated into color for our future paintings. We’ll draw to complete finished\, quality pieces. We’ll use simple graphite\, tortillons and erasers to create powerful\, intriguing drawings. DESCRIPTION:Winter Wonderland: The Enchanted Landscape with Shane Gutierrez \nSundays\, Jan 11 (on-site at WAA)\, Jan 18\, 25\, Feb 1\, 8 (off-site/locations TBA) 2026 from 9:30 am – 12:00 pm (5 classes) \nWinter is a beautiful time of year for the photographer who is willing to get outdoors and brave the cold conditions. The land is reduced to its simplest form\, especially under a blanket of snow. Although I can’t guarantee the ground will be covered with snow\, there is a good chance it will be in January & February. The cold brings a pureness to the country that can be seen in the bare trees\, stark rock formations and the color of the ocean. This allows the photographer to capture clean lines and simple compositions. \nComposition rules will be covered as well as how to dress properly for the cold. Preparing yourself and your equipment along with understanding proper exposure on snowy days are all part of this class. With five weeks to work with\, I allow for one classroom session (1st class) and four “in the field” sessions. The outdoor classes will be weeks 2\, 3\, 4\, & 5. I have locations in mind that leaves it up to you on how much time (short\, medium or long doses) you will want to spend outside the car. If you get cold\, you’ll always be near enough to the parking area to jump into a warm car to take the chill off. \nFor anyone with plenty of spring\, summer\, and fall pictures looking to fill in that winter gap in your landscape portfolio\, or for those who love the wintertime\, this class will give you that kick in the pants to get out beyond your driveway and the confidence you need to overcome your fear of a cold and drab landscape and see the landscape for what it is\, a winter wonderland. \n$175 Members | $205 Non-members \nCLASS REGISTRATION – CURRENT MEMBERS \nCLASS REGISTRATION – NON-MEMBERS

Watercolor is transparent\, fluid and luminous. It glows because light moves through it and reflects off the white paper\, unlike an opaque medium. DESCRIPTION:Drawing & Painting Birds In Nature with Robin Kasparian\nAges 10 – Teens \nTuesdays\, January 13\, 20\, 27 from 4:30pm-6:00pm (3 classes)  \nLearn how to blend oil pastels to create life-like birds in their natural habitat with Robin Kasparian.  Robin is a recently retired certified K-12 art teacher for our local North Kingstown\, Hamilton Elementary School!  In this class\, you will be taught how to paint wet-on-wet watercolor skies and draw birds/nature in oil pastels\, colored pencils\, and paint. You will be learning about observational drawing\, composition\, color theory\, blending\, watercolors techniques\, and much more.
