In this class, we will complete two multi-figure paintings in soft pastel. We will begin by discussing the “narrative” quality of multi-figure paintings, including through examination of examples, then explore methods of planning and sketching a composition, capturing the gesture of figures, how to create form through value, and the use of edges and decisions of emphasis or finish in a multi-figure painting, Students will be encouraged to explore a range of sources of multi-figure scenes: streets, events, home interiors, restaurants and bars, schools, malls, beaches. Throughout the course there will be ample time for assistance and evaluating our progress.
